12/16/16 Newsletter

What happened to December? The students have completed four months of first grade! The students sang like angels in Tuesday’s Christmas Program and Thursday afternoon first graders received a special delivery from the North Pole! The Christmas International Luncheon was a huge success! Thank you to all the parents who helped out by bringing in items to share or helping in the classroom.

Over break it is a great idea to read and practice math daily. Here are some first grade goals to easily practice at home: Fluently add and subtract to 20 (not counting on fingers), skip counting by 1, 2, 5, or 10 from 1-120, and mentally finding 10 more or 10 less than any number. Finding page numbers, especially in the hundreds, is also a great way to practice number sense. Have your little helper assist in finding a page in a cookbook!

Are you in need of another stocking stuffer idea? It is always good to start the New Year with a new plastic folder with bottom pockets, new pencil, or an amazing bookmark!

Special Notes

-There is no homework over break. Students are encouraged to read as much as possible and utilize Mathletics or XtraMath.

-Christmas Break is from December 17th – January 2nd.

Thank you all for the kind and generous gifts and Christmas wishes.

I wish all the first grade families a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year! May God and his angels bless you and guide you always.

12/9/16 Newsletter

Advent is well underway here at St. John. We celebrated the Immaculate Conception at a beautiful Mass Thursday morning and primary students prayed together every morning. They are busy preparing their hearts for the coming of Jesus.

This week students wrote letters to Santa, continued learning subtraction strategies, and listened and wrote about Christmas Around the World. Students learned about Christmas customs and even made ornaments to represent the different places they studied. Thank you Mrs. Erbe and Mrs. Eberly for sharing about Christmas in Germany! On Tuesday, first graders put their shoes outside in hopes that St. Nicholas would make a stop by St. John School. They were excited to find little candy canes and treats!

Christmas Luncheon

The First Grade International Christmas Luncheon is set for next Thursday! Please bring your food (labeled with name of dish and country) to the classroom by 10:30. If your child has any allergies, please bring a special dish for him/her. If your dish is “peanut free’’ or “tree nut free”, please put a note on your dish. We will eat our special lunch in Miss Feeney’s room and the food will be set out in Mrs. Todd’s room. I would like the parents who volunteered to set up to come to the classroom by 10:15. We still have a need for recess supervision. This is a big undertaking and we appreciate all of your help to make it possible. The first graders may wear their Christmas best (free dress). This lunch will take the place of regular lunch/hot lunch of the day. Please still send a separate snack for later in the day.

Christmas Concert

First and second graders will perform on Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00pm in Egan Hall. We will meet in the classroom between 6:40 – 6:50 pm. Please do not drop your child off before 6:40 p.m. I will not be there to supervise. If you are late (arriving after 6:50) please meet us in Egan Hall. The first graders take the stage first, followed by the second grade performance of the Nativity story. Your child will be directed to come sit with you following the first grade concert. You are welcome and encouraged to stay for the second grade performance.

Printing Practice

Handwriting Without Tears printing practice books will come home soon. Please use these to continue printing practice at home as the year continues. These are a great resource, particularly if your child is working on letter formation and/or using lines and spaces correctly.

Advent is in full swing and first graders are busy studying Christmas Around the World. Students learned about Christmas traditions in Great Britain, Australia, Lebanon, Hungary, Jamaica, Kenya, and Ireland this week. Thank you Mrs. O’Leary for coming to share about Christmas in your home country!

International Christmas Luncheon

Please return completed forms by Monday, December 5th. Miss Feeney and I will review the forms, see what we need to buy to round out the list, and send home a confirmation next Friday, December 9th. Thank you in advance for your contributions! Also, a huge thank you to our volunteers! If you are able to attend on December 15th, please visit the signup http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c49aead22a5fd0-christmas. Many hands make light work! 🙂

Report Cards

In reviewing report cards, remember that these are goals for the end of year. If they are progressing, it means they are on their way to meeting the standard or benchmark. If your child is meeting a standard, please continue practicing as the year progresses. In spelling, our goal is for students to memorize specific patterns, rather than simply the list of words. Please keep spelling sorts at home after completing for homework. This will give you and your child an opportunity to review (make sentences, stories, etc.) and continue to use the words. Please sign and return the YELLOW copy of the report card and the report card envelope as soon as possible.

Printing Practice

Handwriting Without Tears printing practice books will come home soon. Please use these to continue printing practice at home as the year continues. These are a great resource, particularly if your child is working on letter formation and/or using lines and spaces correctly.
