First Grade Sailor News

 

What an amazing week! Habitat Day was a huge success. I am so impressed by everyone’s projects. Thank you for your time and help creating, researching, and transporting projects. If you didn’t have a chance to stop by, we will be sending home pictures of your children with their habitats soon.

 

We had a special guest teacher, Mr. Tim Dwyer come on Monday to share about his expedition to Antarctica. He showed videos and pictures of what he saw in the ocean and on the ice. The students had a chance to explore Antarctica too using iPads.   If you check out the New York Times website and search for Antarctica series, you will find a 360 degrees interactive video. Volunteers

On Wednesday, May 31st, I am looking for a few volunteers who would be interested in covering books. I know it is not the most glamorous job, but many hands make for light work. It would be great to have a little work party at the back table first thing in the morning to get some textbooks recovered and inventoried as we wind down the year.

 

Questions to Ask:

-What is the sacrament Confirmation?

-What was your favorite part of Habitat Day?

-What did you learn from Mr. Tim Dwyer about Antarctica/Scuba diving?

 

 

Special Notes:

-No School Monday, May 29th for Memorial Day

-Buddy Lunch is June 1st (lunch will be provided)

-Lunch in the classrooms on June 2nd (due to 8th Grade Tea)

-Last day of school is June 9th with a 10:00 dismissal (dress uniform)

First Grade Sailor News

 

Today the first graders had an amazing time at the zoo.  The scavenger hunt was a wild success!  A huge thank you to all of the fantastic field trip volunteers!

 

As the year winds down, students can be extra excited and anxious about upcoming changes (summer, second grade, new routines, etc.) We are trying to stay focused and end the year on a fun, positive note. We are really working on good manners, problem solving, and being respectful as these are good life lessons to carry on after first grade is over.

 

Habitat Day

On Wednesday, May 24th, students will meet in Egan Hall first thing in the morning. Please bring your 3D model and report to Egan Hall. Miss Feeney and I will be there at 8:05 to help students get set up. Students who are coming from XDC will be escorted to Egan Hall. Parents are invited to tour habitat projects at the end of the day from 2:30 – 3:00. If you are unable to make it at the end of the day, we will be showing our habitats to visiting classes from 10:00 – 11:00, 1:00-1:45, and 2:00 – 3:00.  At 3:00 you can take the habitat models home!

First Grade Sailor News

 

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms! I think you will enjoy your special gift that your children created this week. Enjoy this special day. This weekend our Church celebrates the 100th anniversary of our Lady of Fatima. May Mary bless you and your family with peace and joy!

 

As the year winds down, I encourage you to check in with your child to ensure he/she is able to work independently. Can he/she tie shoes? Work alone for 15 minutes? We are working hard to be sure we are ready for second grade.

 

Field Trip

Friday, May 19th first grade is headed to the Woodland Park Zoo. We will eat lunch there, so please send a disposable sack lunch with your child next Friday. Please also pack a separate snack for your child to eat when we return to class. Students need to wear a uniform top with the St. John logo (red shirt or navy sweatshirt) and good walking shoes. Please drop off booster seats (if your child requires one) to the hallway outside of XDC in the morning. Signs for “Feeney” and “Thornton” will be posted. Make sure your booster is labeled with your name! I still need permission slips and money from a few parents. Please return both ASAP! If you need another form, email me. Thank you!

 

Habitat Day

Homework for this next week is for your child to build/create the 3D model of his/her habitat. It would be great if your child could include the animal as well (a photograph can work). First Grade Sailor News

 

Happy Spring! The sun finally came out (after 175 days) this week. The first graders sang so beautifully last night at their Spring Concert. I’m so proud of their enthusiasm and talent!

 

May is here! We are officially 25 ½ days away from second grade! Second grade is a big jump for some students. Students are expected to be independent, self-directed, make good choices, and display proper classroom behavior. Take time to check in with your child and assess their readiness and feelings about this big accomplishment. On May 1 students participated in the crowning of Mary. First graders brought flowers for Mary and beautifully helped lead one decade of the rosary. This week students also began their study on grasslands, compared shapes, and wrote opinion pieces.

 

MAP Testing

The first graders completed their Reading and Math MAP tests this week. I’m so proud of their hard work this year! In two weeks they will complete STAR testing. Thank you for sending them ready to learn this week.

 

Habitat Day

Today students are bringing home habitat report templates. The target date to finish these reports is May 12th. Please have your children use their best printing. If they want to add additional pages, they are welcome to attach it to the templates. The blank side is for the photograph/picture of the animal. See the information I sent home last week if you have any questions. Please DO NOT turn them in early. In class we reviewed the template and completed one together. A rubric for the project, along with a list of writing conventions is also coming home. Please keep this page for reference while working on the project. On May 24th, parents are invited to tour habitat projects at the end of the day from 2:30 – 3:00. A detailed schedule of the day will be posted with other available visiting times.

 

Field Trip

Thank you to the families who returned the permission slips and fee this week. If you signed up to volunteer, please see the driver form in your child’s folder. I will have 2 parents per group but I need every parent to sign the driver form. Thank you! More details will be sent home for volunteers soon.

-What shape has 3 sides and 3 vertices? No sides or vertices? 4 sides or vertices?
