First Grade Sea Otter News
Congratulations! We exceeded our jog-a-thon goal. Thank you for all of your hard work and support for St. John School. We are celebrating today with a school assembly and free dress. This week the students learned about prayers of the rosary (Apostles Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be). They harvested potatoes, learned about earth’s place in the universe, observed the position of the sun, and we continued to identify nouns in the story If You Take a Mouse to School. We used number lines and 10 frames to learn counting on strategies.
A special thank you to Mrs. Aguila for leading our potato harvest. We even found some carrots and tomatoes as well!
These are parent, student, teacher conferences. Your child is requested to attend. Each conference is 15 minutes with a 5 minutes passing period between. Parents and child will meet with Mrs. Peoples to discuss the Thinking About Me form and an SLE (Schoolwide Learning Expectation) assessment teachers completed. Students will set a goal for the year and then listen to a story on the iPad while parents continue the conference. Thank you to everyone who has scheduled conferences already!
Your child will be bringing home their “book bag” this week. Instructions will be included inside. Please return the bags on Monday even if you didn’t have a chance to read over the weekend because we use them in reading groups. Thank you!
Opt Out Waiver
If you would like to “opt your child out” of the Touching Safety Program that will be presented to the first grade students on October 24th, please sign the form attached to this week’s homework packet. Our lesson focus will be on Boundaries—the limits that define one person as separate from another or from others. There are boundaries you can see (like a fence around a yard) and boundaries you can’t see with your eyes (like the comfort zone around us that we call our “personal space”). Boundaries vary depending on the relationship with the other person. For example, a boundary between a child and a grandparent is different than the boundary between a child and a teacher or coach. Please let me know if you have more questions about the program.
Field Trip Information
Field Trip permission slips for our trip to the SAM on Friday, November 17th will be sent home this coming MONDAY, October 16th. Please sign both sides, send in a labeled envelope with the fee in cash or check (made out to St. John School) and return by Friday, October 20th. Parent chaperones do not need to pay for themselves!
