First Grade Sea Otter News

What an amazing week! Habitat Day was a huge success. I was so impressed by everyone’s projects. Thank you for your time and help creating, researching, and transporting projects. If you didn’t have a chance to stop by, we will be sending home pictures of your children with their habitats soon. We also made windsocks to remember the day of Pentecost and the 7 gifts that the Holy Spirit has given us.

Field Trip on Tuesday!

Tuesday, May 29th first grade is headed to the Woodland Park Zoo. We will eat lunch there. Please send a disposable sack lunch with your child. Please also pack a separate snack for your child to eat when we return to school. Students need to wear a uniform top with the St. John logo (red shirt or navy sweatshirt) and good walking shoes. Please drop off booster seats (if your child requires one) to the hallway outside of XDC in the morning. Signs for “Feeney” and “Peoples” will be posted. Make sure your booster is labeled with your name!

Summer Conference Sign Ups: This time of year I like to offer optional conferences as a way for you to check in on progress, second grade readiness, and ideas to help your child over the summer. If you do not sign up for a conference, I will send home a summer packet and student summer contract with ideas for things you can work on over the summer.   J

We had a great week! We began learning about the Rosary, telling time to the half hour, and wrapping up out desert habitat unit with a desert watercolor scene. Students also gave their best effort on the MAP test this week. We are so proud of all the progress they have made this year!

First graders also got to perform their Spanish play for the second grade students titled: La Ratoncita Martina. They worked really hard in rehearsals and thoroughly enjoyed performing!

Habitat Day

On Wednesday, May 23rd, students will meet in Egan Hall first thing in the morning. Please bring your 3D model and report to Egan Hall. Miss Feeney and I will be there at 8:05 to help students get set up. Students who are coming from XDC will be escorted to Egan Hall. Parents are invited to tour habitat projects at the end of the day from 2:30 – 3:00. If you are unable to make it at the end of the day, we will be showing our habitats to visiting classes from 10:00 – 11:00, 1:00-1:45, and 2:00 – 3:00. At 3:00 you can take the habitat models home!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you amazing moms! I hope you will enjoy the gift your children created this week. Enjoy this special day! This week we are finishing our study of the sacraments and will begin learning about the Rosary. In math we learned about regular and irregular units of measurement and in science we completed the study of our last habitat, the desert! We had so much fun singing at the Spring Concert and participating at the JumpAThon; it was a full week!

As the year winds down, I encourage you to check in with your child to ensure he/she is able to work independently. Can he/she tie shoes? Work alone for 15 minutes? We are working hard to be sure we are ready for second grade.

Habitat Day

Homework for this next week is for your child to build/create the 3D model of his/her habitat. It would be great if your child could include the animal as well (a photograph can work). It is important that the first graders take ownership of their creations. First Grade Sea Otter News

May is here! We are officially 24 days away from second grade! Second grade is a big jump for some students. Students are expected to be independent, self-directed, make good choices, and display proper classroom behavior. Take time to check in with your child and assess their readiness and feelings about this big accomplishment.

This week students participated in the crowning of Mary. First graders brought flowers for Mary and beautifully helped lead one decade of the rosary at church. Students also began their study of the grasslands habitat and complete our 3-D shape unit by comparing and creating composite shapes.

THANK YOU First Grade Parents for the delicious staff lunch on Thursday!

Habitat Day

Today was the “due date” to finish the habitat report templates, but please do not turn them in before the due date. If your child wants to add additional pages to the report they are welcome to attach it to the templates. Now is the time to shift your focus on creating the 3D habitat. The “due dates” were created to be a target to help you stay on track for completion; do not stress if you are not there yet. J Have fun!

On May 23rd, parents are invited to tour habitat projects at the end of the day from 2:30 – 3:00. A detailed schedule of the day will be posted with other available visiting times.

Field Trip on Monday, May 29th

Permission Slips were sent home today with homework. Please complete both sides and return by next Friday, May 11th. Also please let me know ASAP if you would like to chaperone this field trip. Details and drivers forms will be sent home for volunteers soon.

Brown Bear Car Wash Fundraiser

6th grade will be selling Brown Bear tickets from 2:45-3:15 on Tuesdays and Fridays (except May 18) on the playground! $7 per tickets ($5.50 goes directly to St. John) You can still order directly from Scrip!
