First Grade Sea Otter News

We are about to begin our final school week of December and students have completed almost four months of first grade! This week the first graders began their unit on subtraction using part-part-whole strategy. First graders participated in Coding week on Thursday by learning to code with their 8th grade buddies ( We are wrapping up learning about 20 countries in our Christmas Around the World Unit. The first graders learned about Christmas in Colombia, Honduras, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland and Peru. We will be ready to celebrate all these cultures next week at our International Christmas Luncheon!

Absence Notification

Please notify me if you know your child will be absent during any of the days before Christmas break.  We have lots of Christmas activities, gifts, and celebrations and I want to plan accordingly to make sure as many students as possible are included. Thanks!

Christmas Luncheon on Wednesday- Free Dress of Christmas Best

On Monday, I will send home a form with what you will bring to the luncheon. We have a few parents who signed up for the same items so I may assign you something else we need. Thank you for being flexible! On Wednesday, please bring your food (labeled with name of dish and country) to the parish administration building (kitchen) by 10:00. We will have outlets available if you need to keep something warm in your crockpot.  If your child has any allergies, please bring a special dish for him/her. Please label “Contains Nuts” if your dish does so.  If you are bringing beverages, decorations, or plates/napkins/silverware, please bring them to your child’s classroom. We will eat our special lunch in my classroom and food will be set up in the West hallway. We would like the parents who volunteered to set up to come to the classroom by 10:00. This is a big undertaking and we appreciate all of your help to make it possible! This lunch will take the place of regular lunch/hot lunch of the day. Please still send a separate snack for later in the day.

Christmas Concert

First and second graders will perform on Thursday, December 19th at 7:00pm in Egan Hall. We will meet in the classroom between 6:40 – 6:50 pm. Please do not drop your child off before 6:40 p.m. teachers will not be there to supervise. If you are late (arriving after 6:50) please meet us in Egan Hall. The first graders take the stage first, followed by the second grade performance of the Nativity story. Your child will be directed to come sit with you following the first grade concert. You are welcome to stay for the second grade performance.

Report Cards

Please remember to sign and return the purple copy in its envelope by Friday, December 20st.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s grades feel free to reach out to me.


Christmas Read In-December 20

We will be having a “Christmas Read In” next Friday the 20tht. Have your child bring his/her favorite Christmas books (please label with your name) and their favorite stuffed animals for a special cozy Christmas reading time before break!

– What can you tell me about Christmas in Italy? Ireland? Peru?

Did you Know…

when your child can see groups instead of counting one by one, he/she can add past 10.  For example, if you roll dice and your child can tell you the number without counting, she is using the skill called subitizing.  Need help? Play games (dice games, dominoes, Mexican train dominoes, tensies, and card games)
