First Grade Sea Otter News

This week the first graders “visited” the rainforest and learned about the four layers and what animals live in each part.  They continued to count by tens using place value blocks and dimes.  Students prayerfully colored the Stations of the Cross in their booklet as they learned how much Jesus loves them.

As you can see from the email sent to you today, St. John School will be closed until April 25.  My plan for helping you and your child continue to learn and grow is to send a daily email with assignments.  The goal is to work 1-2 hours each weekday. You will be using the materials sent home today (math workbook, printing book, science book, Stations of the Cross, Ocean Log, Lent path, and reading bag).  Each day I will send something like this (with more specific information to help you guide them).

  3. Spelling: Sort your words today. Then label with the pattern.

My hope is that I can record myself teaching lessons like Calendar time, read alouds, reading groups, and Science.  Stay tuned for more information soon.  Please let me know if you do not have access to a printer.  If I scan assignments by email and you can’t print them out, we can schedule a pick-up time at school as needed.

Many students were upset about what is happening around them.  They shared today that they are worried about grandparents getting the coronavirus, how school will work at home, who will be there at home if you are working etc. They act out when this happens because they don’t know how to tell you.  They feel our nervous energy.   This weekend, develop a plan that includes a structured routine for each day.  This will help their anxiety and let them have control of something in their lives.
